Color Surge
Broken tv, power surge?
I have a 7 year old Mitubishi HDTV and a 15 year old sony tv. earlier in the year the sony all of a sudden started cutting off the far right and left sides to any picture. I later started using a mitusbishi HDTV and for a few months it worked great and then one day the power turned on but there was no picture. I started using the old sony tv for about a weak and right in the middle of watching something, some sort of special effects looking thing happened and now I only get a vertical line of color from my tv. How is it possible for 2 tv's to essentially have the same problem within a week of each other. they are both downstairs but plugged into different surge protectors. after about a week, the Mitsubishi can actually show a picture but the picture is still very screwed up. the sony tv still has a vertical line of bright white and it has sound but no picture. no power outages or surges that I know of so what could be causing this to happen?
In order for the Sony to display a line from top to bottom
the horizontal scan thru the flyback transformer has to be
present. Other wise the vertical B+(30-35v) and screen B+(about 185v) would be missing
this means most likely the Sony has a bad YOKE plug connection or a small 10 ohm ceramic pot for centering or width in the horiz yoke return line (gone bad)
A relatively simple repair and common to Sony TV's
As for Mitsubishi you failed to say what the picture looked like
But before going crazy take the surge protector off the Mitsubishi line and plug it direct into wall can check it out
Dont hook up any antenna's or coax
tune to channels 2-13 one at a time
look for normal black and white snow
If you dont have that something is wrong that you need a repairman for repairs
You can trick your power company into coming out
dont tell them much just tell them 2 TV's failed in basement
and you need the service checked for polarity and voltage
They will send a man out he will only be there 2-3 mins its a fast test

Like color are messed up faces are wrong color etc
or picture is too short or narrow
or looks like diagonal colored lines etc
